Summary
The SETARA Institute released its 2024 Tolerant Cities Index (IKT) report, which ranks Salatiga as the most tolerant city in Indonesia, pushing Singkawang into second place. Salatiga’s achievement is driven by progressive policies such as the Local Regulation on Tolerance and the Local Regulation on Pancasila Education. This report evaluates 94 cities based on eight indicators, ranging from government regulations and government actions to social regulations and religious social inclusion. Other cities in the top 10 include Semarang, Magelang, Bekasi, and Pematangsiantar—the latter showing a significant jump in ranking thanks to strong political leadership. Meanwhile, Parepare, Cilegon, and Lhokseumawe were recorded as the cities with the lowest tolerance scores, not solely due to cases of intolerance, but due to a lack of promotional policies and progressive leadership.
